The Tower of Babel
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. (Genesis 11: 1, Key Bible, KJV)
Earth: Put for its inhabitants.
This is man's beginning attempt to unify mankind, and ends with God's new provision to unify all in blessing with Abraham's seed. As scripture states during this epoch the inhabitants spoke one language as God intended this to be. As plainly seen man's attempt to do what is right in his own eyes resulted in God's intervention.
Babel (confusion) is placed in the days of Nimrod (rebellion); "Babel was a pointed rejection of God's instruction to "replenish the earth" (Gen 9:1). It was a flagrant example of the corporate pride and willfulness of man. The intent of the tower may not have been to reach heaven; the expression can refer to a tower with an idolatrous temple for heaven." (Notes from Key Bible KJV)
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. (Gen 11: 2)
Shinar: Known as Babylonia.
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. (Gen 11: 3)
Said: Sin with their tongues punished in the same manner (v. 7)
I heard a preacher refer to the tongue as the "pink tornado." Like a tornado the tongue it destroys everything in it's path. Jesus said, "There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man." (Mark 7: 15) We can see evil comes from the heart.
Burn: They were so determine to construct the tower they used fire to burn the brick instead of waiting on the sun. When sin is prevalent it becomes the driven force for contempt of God's will.
And they said, "Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." (Gen 11: 4) Consider this, God rewards obedience with blessings, and disobedience with a curse. Often times we wonder why things are so disrupted in our lives. We should consider what we say and do.
May reach: And its top with heavens, i.e. with the Zodiac depicted on it, as in ancient temples of Denderah and Esneh in Egypt.
Let make a name: Manifesting independence of God. Nimrod (rebellion) being the rebel leader. There is much in a name and Nimrod lived up to his by leading this confederacy.
And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. (Gen 11: 5)
The Lord came down: This act of disobedience prompted God to leave his throne to witness up close and personal the works of Nimrod and his followers. Whither shall I go from thy spirit or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold thou art there. (Psalm 139: 7, 8) There is no hiding God is omnipresent and omniscient.
And the Lord said, "Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. (Gen 11: 6)
The Lord is saying I gave unto all one language. Instead of replenishing the earth after the flood like I commanded them to do. They follow Nimrod into sin and now if I don't put a stop to this foolishness they will do anything that they think of.
Go to, let Us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. (Gen 11: 7)
Quite a contrast from verse four. Man said he was going up, God said, "no, I'll come down." Jesus will come down to implement judgment before anyone goes up.
So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the ear; and they left off to build the city. (Gen 11: 8)
Scattered them: This was to preserve the revelation contained in the Zodiac and the constellations. when God confounded their language they could no longer communicate with each other. This is the reason why we all speak different languages today. When we hear forgien languages it sounds like babel (confusion) because we do not understand.
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did thee confound the language of all the earth; and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the fact of all the earth. (Gen 11:9)
God confounded their language and they could no longer communicate with each other. This is the reason why we all speak different languages today. When we hear forgein languages it sounds like babel (confusion) because we do not understand.
There in our nation's Capitol is another Tower of Babel (the Washington Monument). The Washington Monument represents political babel. We hear their words spoken daily, yet it makes no sense. This system does not say lets go up, it says lets get rich and make a name for ourselves.
