When Evening Comes

Jesus completed feeding the five thousand; And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. (Mark 6: 45)

This was quiet a task for one individual when viewed through natural eyes; but when viewed through spiritual eyes one can see the power of God not only in the feeding of the five thousand but the spiritual equipping (preparation) of individuals.

And when he had sent them away he departed into a mountain to pray. (Mark 6: 46) Jesus slipped away to commune with His father (our Father).  The people wanted to take Jesus by force and make him their king.  They were suffering at the hands of the Romans and their new Task Masters, the appointed not anointed priest, the Pharisees and their own unbelief.

An when even (evening) was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. (Mark 6: 47) There stood Jesus (The Light of The World) as darkness approached. Though in the natural sense Jesus was alone, however in the spiritual sense He was not.  Scripture tell us after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist the spirit of God descended upon him like a dove and God spoke from heaven, "This is my beloved Son, whom I am well pleased."

And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them; and about the fourth watch (3:00 - 6:00 a.m.) of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed them by.  But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit and cried out:  For they all saw him, and were troubled.  And immediately he talk with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer; it is I be not afraid. And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased; and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure and wondered. For they considered not the miracle of the loaves; for their heart was hardened. (Mark 6: 48-52)

They saw Him walking on water and he would have passed them by.  Picture it, what an awesome display of God's glory and power.  There in pitch black darkness; they see this figure approaching, how soon did they forget what Jesus accomplished with five loaves of bread and two fishes.

It was their unbelief that Jesus almost passed them by.  The Jewish superstition held that the appearance of spirits during the night brought disaster.  Scripture does not indicate they were in a storm.  They were just going through a tough time.  We at times have a difficult time rowing the troubled waters of life. We often travail when the wind of trials causes us to fear when darkness causes us to lose hope.

For they considered not the miracle of the loaves.  How often have we not considered when Jesus has made a way when there appeared to be no way.  When Jesus entered the ship the winds ceased (calmness, peacefulness)..  For their heart was hardened.  They as we are at times have not surrendered to Jesus. Consider the struggles we may be going through and who brought us through them. We are troubled on every side, yet not distress; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. (2 Cor 8, 9)

Jesus said, "Be of good cheer; it is I be not afraid." No matter what circumstances may arise Jesus is always on time.  It is written, God did not give us a spirit of fear.  Know that, live it, and you will be of good cheer when you are in troubled waters when evening comes.
