The Gibeonites Deceive Joshua
In Joshua 9 it tells the story of how Joshua and his people were tricked into forming a league with a people slated to be destroyed by God.
It came to pass, when all the kings which were on this Jordan, in the hill, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof: (Joshua 9:1)
In Genesis God used the flood to destroy all the evilness that plagued the land. Noah and his family of eight were the only ones God found worthy to escape the pending doom.
Those evil spirits returned therefore since God made a covenant not destroyed the earth in that manner again He used Joshua and the sword to rid the promised land of its evil wicked people and take possession of the land that flows with milk and honey.
As you can see from verse one these kings are forming a confederacy to fight Joshua and his people. Really it is God they are fighting.
Today there are those confederacies that exist for the purpose of destroying God's church (people). Anyone opposing God is an enemy. Any teachings other than sound doctrine is an enemy of God. Any lawlessness is an enemy to God, you get the picture?
That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord. (Joshua 9:2)
Interesting how the enemy can be on one accord to fight against God and the people of God can't be on one accord to fight against the enemy. One other interesting note is, accord is translated from the original language as mouth.
And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho an to Ai, they did work slyly, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy.
(Joshua 9:3-5)
Proverbs 11:18 in part pronounces the wicked worketh a deceitful work. The enemy has great faith that this plan will work. Of course they did, look at the preparation put into their plan. Hollywood could not come up with a better story line for a movie.
And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? (Joshua 9:6,8)
This is a very bold move. How bold are we in our faith?
And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. (Joshua 9:8-11)
First of all when they were asked where did they come from they answered, from a far country. That should have been the first clue something is wrong with this picture. Just as Satan showed up in the Garden of Eden, he shows up in the midst of God's people again. He will continue to show up deceiving many until God's people exercises wisdom and being harmless as a dove.
In verse 16 it states after Joshua made a league with the enemy it took them three days to find out they were deceived. The one thing Joshua didn't do is consult with God first about this people.
When we don't consult with God before we venture into a situation the results is not favourable. We find ourselves in the middle of the ocean in a leaky boat sinking fast. Consulting God first before we enter into something will yield God's blessing and protection. It maybe God doesn't want certain things for us and we can clearly see self without God is a person waiting to be deceived.
Always consult God first and wait for his reply.
