The Garden

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7)

And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. (Genesis 2:8)

And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2:9)

Although there may have been other purposes for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil which are not mentioned in Scripture, it functioned as a test of obedience.  Adam and Eve had to choose whether to obey God or break His commandment.  There is conjecture as to what would have become of the tree and what other purpose it may have have served, but these views should be recognized as conjecture.  When they actually ate the forbidden fruit, the consequences of their actions became self-evident.  They found themselves in a different relationship to God because of sin.  Access to the tree of life was based upon a proper relationship with God.  The real questions which faced Adam and Eve are the same ones that face people today.  Which path should be chosen? What kind of relationship does one want with God?
